Nigeria is ready to send a peacekeeping force to war-torn Liberia only if approved by regional leaders in west Africa, an army spokesman said Monday.
At least 700 Nigerian troops will act as an "interpositional force" to separate Liberian government troops from rebels, according to Colonel Chukwuemeka Onwuamaegbu.
With the addition of two companies of around 150 troops apiece from Mali and Ghana and a multinational headquarters detachment, the total strength of the west African force would reach around 1,500, he said.
"We're basically ready once we get our marching orders from thepolitical leadership," the spokesman said.
US President George W. Bush has said this week his country would only sent peacekeeping troops to Liberia after the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) troops are deployed.
ECOWAS has promised to send up to 3,000 peacekeepers to Liberia.
