'World Expo Strategy' Kicked Off in Shanghai

Though there are still 7 years to go before 2010 the preparatory work in regard with all aspects of the World Expo has already been launched on the basis of achieving a periodic result in combating the atypical pneumonia.

In the special period when Shanghai was combating the SARS a heated discussion on the "World Expo & a New Round of Development in Shanghai" was also going on, sweeping over the whole city of Shanghai. By means of net, mail and all sorts of discussions, leading cadres at all levels and the populace in Shanghai aired their views on the "World Expo Strategy".

Though there are still 7 years to go before 2010 the preparatory work in regard with all aspects of the World Expo has already been launched on the basis of achieving a periodic result in combating the atypical pneumonia.

Last year saw China succeed in reaping the right for hosting the World Expo in Shanghai in 2010. The international experience indicates that to hold a successful world exposition means a great impetus to the social and economic development of a city.

It was under this situation that the municipal committee and government of Shanghai made a decision for the great discussion on the "World Expo & a New Round of Development in Shanghai", turning the process of preparation into a motivation for a new course of development in Shanghai.

The World Expo is another great opportunity in history that Shanghai is facing after it has developed and opened Pudong to the outside world, pointed out Chen Liangyu, Member of the Political Bureau of the Central Party Committee, Secretary of Shanghai Municipal Party Committee. How to grasp firmly the opportunity for pushing the economic and social development in Shanghai onto a new stage is an urgent strategic task of great importance in front of us.

Shanghai has already witnessed a two-digital increase in economy for 11 consecutive years with last year to see the average GDP to approach US$ 5000 per capita. However, in recent years we've seen a faster rise in business cost with a heavier pressure and growing difficulty for the growth of economy in Shanghai. Therefore, how to find out a breakthrough for a faster economic development in Shanghai is a matter of great urgency.

During the heated discussion the great masses of cadres and people gradually came to a common recognition: to speed up the economic development in Shanghai. The key point is to grasp chances at present on the one hand, i.e. trying the best to seize firmly the opportunity of the world manufacturing industry in transition for the enhancement of the industrial level in Shanghai. And on the other it is to conduct the strategy for booming the city by bringing the science and technology and education into full play, thereby to break up a "single but precipitous path for reaching the summit of Mt Huashan".

The thematic topic for the "Shanghai World Expo 2010" is "city, to make life better". According to the new object a new strategic conception for the construction of a worldly metropolis has already been brought to light. In the days to come, attention will be focused on the adjustment of structure, enhancement of city functions and optimization in the layout for striding towards the metropolis of the world.

Of the projects, that catch the eyes of the people are the deep-water harbor, airport and information port and the high-speed railway, namely "three ports and one way", the hinge projects of importance plus the 800 kilometer-long rail transportation network and 650 km network of expressways to link up the city in the center with surrounding areas and the Yangtze River Delta.

Meanwhile, it is to build Shanghai into a national garden city with an ecological environment in which people can live a relatively harmonious life in nature. This has become the key link in building Shanghai into a worldly metropolis, thereby turning it into a city where it is suitable for people domestic and foreign to make their careers and stay.
