Economic loss amounting to as much as 54 million yuan (6.5 million US dollars) was inflicted on 12 towns in east China's Anhui Province by a tornado and heavy rainstorm Saturday afternoon.
Information released Sunday by local anti-flood and drought headquarters revealed that from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, storms hit 110 villages in Yingshang County, Anhui Province, affecting 244,200 mu (16,280 hectares) of farmlands and 203,500 local people, damaging 14,500 houses, and reducing local grain yield by 70,000 tons.
More losses are expected as high-voltage electricity lines in four towns have been damaged and flooding has increased the difficulty of assessing the damage.
The local government has sent teams to supervise rescue work.
