A senior Chinese official Friday called for the continuation of the "strike hard" campaign designed to crack down on crime so as to create a long-term, stable social environment for China's economic development.

Luo Gan, director of the Central Committee for the Comprehensive Management of Public Security, said in Beijing at the Second Full Meeting of the committee in 2003, that after more than two years of the "strike-hard" campaign, social security has been markedly improved.

He said various types of criminal offenses are re-emerging recently and this calls for a continuation of the "strike-hard" policy.

Luo, who is also a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, said the focus of this year's work on the comprehensive management of public security is the vigorous promotion and building of a public security network that helps prevent and reduce criminal offenses as many as possible.

He called for the mobilization and participation of the masses in preventing and fighting against criminal activities.
