The transitional government of the
Democratic Republic of the Congo
(DRC) was sworn in here on Friday.
Twenty ministers and 15 deputy ministers took the oath of office in Kinshasa, capital of the vast central African country, vowing to respect the constitution and laws of the country and pledging loyalty to President Joseph Kabila.
The interim government comprises 36 ministers and 25 deputy ministers, who come from the former government, four ex-rebel groups and oppositions, civil communities and militias in the eastern part of the country.
The DRC's new government was set up under a peace agreement signed in December, aimed at ending the armed conflicts in the country.
According to the agreement and the transitional constitution, the term for the new government is two years, and after that a new government will be elected through general elections. Kabila also heads the government.
However, members of the two ex-rebel groups which nearly five years ago plunged the DRC into war refused to attend the ceremony, saying it was "unconstitutional" because it was not included in the transition constitution.
