The Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) disease which swept China in spring and early summer not only claimed hundreds of lives, but also posed great employment difficulties for its 2.12 million college graduates.

Helping young people find jobs has become a new task for the Communist Youth League of China (CYLC), the country's biggest youth organization with 69.86 million members.

Founded in 1922, the CYLC is a politically-oriented organization widely regarded as an adjunct and reserve force of the Communist Party of China (CPC).

"But following the implementation of market economy mechanism in China, the organization gradually intensified its social service functions," said Li Jiahua, associate professor with the Beijing-based China Youth Political College.

Wang Xiao, a senior official with the CYLC told Xinhua on Friday that helping young people find a job is nowadays the priority mission of the CYLC, which has set up nearly 4,000 employment service organizations in urban and rural areas.

In early 2003, the CYLC opened a website (WWW.gradnet.edu.cn) offering employment information to college and university graduates and initiated a volunteer campaign to encourage college students to work in Western areas after graduation.

Meanwhile, another website (WWW.chinajc.com) was also launched by CYLC, targeting all young people in need of jobs. The website regularly hosted on-line job fairs offering more than 50,000 job opportunities.

In addition, the CYLC plans to assist 4 million laid-off young workers gain employment in the next three years by cooperating with the Labor and Social Security Ministry.

In an effort to encourage the unemployed young people to start their own businesses, widely regarded as a major source of employment, the CYLC helps young business people apply for small bank loans.

Statistics available show that about 4,400 young people have started their own businesses with the help of the CYLC.
