China's Ministry of Communications has allocated 13 million yuan (1.6 million US dollars) to help the flood-stricken areas to repair damaged roads, the ministry announced Friday.
The ministry said the money would be first used in the 15 worst-affected provincial areas, including Anhui, Sichuan, Guizhou, Hunan, and Tibet. Roads and bridges in these places have been seriously damaged, causing disruption on some national highways.
According to the ministry, flash floods, mud flows and landslides caused by heavy rains damaged 17 national highways, 48 provincial highways and a large number of county and township roads, causing economic losses totaling 2 billion yuan (241.6 million US dollars).
The ministry has just issued two emergency notices to the national communications sectors on disasters and road repairs during the flood season.
A national traffic safety inspection is being carried out by local communications sectors along roads near rivers and mountains. Safety signs and travel warnings have also been marked along the damaged roads in flood-hit areas.
Most national highways blocked by the flooding in the 15 areas have been reopened, except for one part of Sichuan Province. But the ministry warned local authorities to stay alert for further flooding.
