More Troops Sent to Protect Dykes of China's Huaihe River
More than 2,000 troops under the Nanjing Military Area Command have been dispatched to protect the dykes of the Huaihe River, which has been hit by the worst flood since 1991.
More than 2,000 troops under the Nanjing Military Area Command have been dispatched to protect the dykes of the Huaihe River, which has been hit by the worst flood since 1991.
The troops, along with more than 30,000 militia reserves, are guarding the river's embankments between Hongze Lake and the Yangtze River in east China's Jiangsu Province, a key area where floodwater in Huaihe flows into the Yangtze.
Currently, the water level in this part of the Huaihe hit a record high of 11.97 meters, and the fall of water inside and outside the dykes reached seven meters.
Meanwhile, rainstorms on Thursday once again ravaged the HuaiheRiver valley, further increasing the possibility of dyke collapse in this key area.
Sources from the military command said that from Wednesday afternoon to Thursday afternoon, some 4,552 meters of the dykes had been strengthened and 3,2000 people evacuated.
Previously, the command sent more than 8,000 personnel to combat the flood.
