Tourist Arrivals in Macao Fall in First Half Year
Tourist arrivals to the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) dropped by 7.5 percent in the first half of this year from the corresponding period of last yearto 5 million, according to government figures.

However, figures released by the Statistics and Census Servicesof the Macao SAR government Wednesday show that the number of tourists from the Mainland went up by 21.6 percent to 2.3 million.
With the wane of the effect of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), the falling margin in June was much narrower thanthat in May. Macao registered a 97.8 percent fall in May and only 5.4 percent in June, compared with the corresponding periods of last year.
Figures also show that the number of tourists from Taiwan, which is one of the three main tourist source markets for Macao, dived 75.4 percent in June, as affected by the SARS outbreak on the island. Tourist arrivals via air traffic dropped by 43.3 percent in the first half year to 253,004.
