The Huaihe River flood this year is larger than the massive one in 1991, officials with the Huaihe River flood control headquarters said Tuesday.
In 22 days, the Huaihe valley has received a total of 79.8 billion cubic meters of rainfall, 5.9 billion cubic meters more than the 1991 figure in 30 days.
Water levels at most major hydrological stations along the mainstream have exceeded alert lines and all the hydrological stations along the lower reaches of the mainstream and tributarieshave observed water levels higher than in 1991.
The top levels in the middle reaches of the Huaihe River and tributaries are all much higher, said the officials.
However, due to effective measures, only nine out of 22 flood diversion areas along the Huaihe River have been put into use, compared with 17 in 1991.
