Chinese Port City Prepares for ASEM Economic Ministers' Meeting

The northeast Chinese port city of Dalian has mobilized its nearly six million citizens to prepare for the upcoming Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) Economic Ministers' Meeting.

The northeast Chinese port city of Dalian has mobilized its nearly six million citizens to prepare for the upcoming Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) Economic Ministers' Meeting.

The meeting, to be held from July 22 to 24, will be the largestconference at the highest level in China since the defeat of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), Minister of Commerce Lu Fuyuan said Monday.

The city's organizing committee, headed by the mayor, established 18 working teams for service, reception, publicity, communication, safeguarding and medical service, according to the organizing committee. The meeting's service team were carefully chosen. Huang Yuanfang, one of the 35 liaison officers, got the position after five rounds of examination.

"It's my first time to participate in such an international conference and I'll offer the best service I can to make the city unforgettable to the delegates," she said.

Nineteen-year-old Dalian resident Claudia Ning said she dreamedof becoming one of the volunteers when she heard the news while studying in England's Sheffield University.

The dream became a reality when she returned home for summer vacation and was selected as one of the 100 volunteers.

"I'm so happy to join the volunteer team and I'll offer top service to show the participants the new look of the Chinese younger generation and the hope for Chinese future economic progress," Ning said.

The city's hotels were renovated to offer better communication and Internet service and to keep the air fresh. Sanitation officials were also embedded in the hotels to monitor the food andbeverages, water and public health systems. Anti-SARS work was a priority of the preparation work.

"We will do our best to offer quality service to the participants to promote the image of Dalian and China at large," said Duan Zhiqiang, a senior official of the organizing committee.
