King Norodom Sihanouk on Monday appealed to Cambodians to maintain peace and stability and to hold peaceful, free and fair elections.
The king made the appeal when arriving at the Phnom Penh International Airport with his queen after four months in Beijing for medical checkup and rest.
"I hope our political parties are united and to work in coordination with each other, as we are all Khmer," he told reporters. "We should maintain our nation's hard-won peace and stability."

The king also said that "I will not interfere with the politics, but as a king of the country, I would like to help resolve the issues and difficulties met by the country. It is also for the benefit of the nation."
In his earlier statement to the nation, King Sihanouk urged thepoliticians to resolve disputes through negotiations not violence, and "don't promise to the people what is impossible to do."
