Conference on Int'l Cooperation for Tourism to be Held in HK

It will be the largest international conference to be held here since late May when the World Health Organization lifted the travel adversary against Hong Kong it issued in connection with the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS).
The organizers, the Boao Forum for Asia (BFA) and the World Tourism Organization (WTO), believed that the conference will helprestore confidence in Asia tourism industry and will promote greater cooperation among Asian countries and the world.
At the press conference here jointly held by BFA Secretariat, WTO and Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) government,Yao Shenhong, director of the BFA Secretariat, said that despite the limited time available for preparatory works, the support to the conference has been overwhelming.
He cited the confirmation of nearly 30 high level delegations of various countries and regions and around 900 delegates from international organizations, tourism trade and academia, with the total estimated number of participants topping 1,000.
Over 600 Hong Kong and overseas correspondents also applied forcovering the conference.
Yao said the conference, focusing on "revitalizing Asian tourism," will discuss the government's role in revitalizing Asiantourism, role of the tourism industry in revitalizing Asian tourism and promotion of intra-regional tourism promotion in the Asian-Pacific region.
He said a ministerial "round table meeting" will be devoted to an in-depth interactive discussions for considering policy recommendations on revitalizing Asian tourism.
Duncan Pescod, deputy commissioner for Tourism of the HKSAR government, said at the press conference that Hong Kong is highly honored to be the host city of the conference, which demonstrates HK's importance as an important tourism center in Asia.
"We would like to take this opportunity to demonstrate to the world our achievement in combating SARS, and showcase Hong Kong asan attractive tourism destination," he said.
Francesco Frangialli, secretary-general of WTO, said the historical event will send a signal of confidence and support fromWTO to China and to the Asian tourism industry.
The convening of the conference indicated that HKSAR, the Chinese mainland and the entire Asia region has overcome the worstimpact of SARS, he said, adding the tourism in Asia-Pacific is coming back on track and will soon re-emerge as it once was, a vigor and powerful engine for economic development in the region.
