Water levels on the upper Huaihe River were dropping rapidly on Sunday, but emergency workers were told to remain vigilant against flooding.
The Huaihe River Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters announced that the water level at Wangjiaba hydrological station on the mainstream of the upper Huaihe River stood at 28.33 meters at 6 p.m. Sunday, down 0.36 meters from the day before.
At the same time, the water level at Zhengyangguan was also subsiding, reaching 26.65 meters, down 0.15 meters from Saturday'shighest level.
In contrast, water levels in Bengbu City and the Hongze Lake onthe lower reaches of the Huaihe River rose slightly, due to the flood crest coming from the upper reaches.
By 6 p.m. Sunday, water levels at Wujiadu of Bengbu had risen to 21.82 meters, and at Jiangba hydrological station on Hongze Lake to 14.25 meters.
Sources with the flood control headquarters quoted weather forecasts predicting no serious rainfall in the Huaihe River valleys in the immediate future.
An official with the headquarters said the flood control risk at Hongze Lake remained grave, saying it still had to empty 19 billion cubic meters of floodwaters into the sea.
