Huaihe River Flood Waters Reach Critical Level
The water level of the Huaihe River has reached critical level with some stretches rising to record heights, an official with the Office of the State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters said Saturday.

At 5 p.m. Friday, the water level at Zhengyangguan hydrologicalstation on the middle reaches of the river, reached a record 27.65meters, and the water level at Jiangba hydrological station on Hongze Lake, on the lower reaches of Huaihe River, also rose to a record 14.30 meters at 7 p.m. Friday.
Cheng Dianlong, vice-director of the Office of the State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters, said the number of flood fighters along the Huaihe River had risen to 2.4 million from 1.13million the previous day because embankments along the river were under severe stress after weeks of flooding.
Friday saw 146 risks on the river or around the diversion areas,including 34 comparatively severe water leakages, but all were under control.
The State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters for thefirst time this year launched its anti-flood contingency plan, allocating and transporting emergency materials from the state-owned warehouses in Shandong and Hubei Provinces to Anhui Province.
The anti-flood materials include rafts, electrical machinery and lights.
