Bush Assures Support to Great Lakes Regional Peace

US President George W. Bush Friday assured his Ugandan counterpart Yoweri Museveni of the US government's support to his efforts in establishing peace in the Great Lakes region.

US President George W. Bush Friday assured his Ugandan counterpart Yoweri Museveni of the US government's support to his efforts in establishing peace in the Great Lakes region.

President Bush made the remarks on Friday afternoon when he washolding bilateral talks with President Museveni at the Imperial Botanical Beach Hotel in Entebbe, some 40 km south of Kampala. according to a press release issued by the Ugandan State House.

Bush said he came to Uganda to herald President Museveni's leadership in Uganda and the east Africa region as a whole, addingthat his coming was in recognition of Museveni's strong support for free trade and his leadership in resolving regional conflicts as a strategically located country in the heart of Africa.

Bush also assured Museveni of his government's support and friendship in his quest for free trade and his fight against HIV/AIDS.

President Museveni thanked the US president for finding time inhis current African tour to visit Uganda, saying that Uganda is uniquely situated in the heart of the African continent.

Museveni said that he was pleased that the United States had extended financial support for Uganda's development and had made their big market accessible to Ugandan products through the African Growth Opportunity Act (AGOA) initiative.

President Museveni was accompanied to the bilateral talks by the ministers of defense, tourism trade and industry, the presidency, and ministers of state for security and foreign affairs.

President Bush was accompanied by Secretary of State Colin Powell, National Security Adviser Condeleezza Rice, Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs Walter Kansteiner.

Uganda is Bush's fourth leg of five-nation African tour.

Bush left Uganda Friday evening after his four-hour visit to Entebbe town, for Nigeria, the final stop of his African visit.
