Zhong Nanshan, head of Guangdong'santi-SARS expert team, has called for the establishment of a national system to facilitate the common use of SARS samples.

An academician with China's Academy of Engineering, Zhong said Friday at the International Science Symposium on SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome) that samples taken from early SARS patients were valuable for future epidemiology and drug research, especially at a time when the disease is basically contained.

Beijing and Guangzhou, the most seriously affected areas, had systems for effective use of the samples, but a national system was yet to be set up jointly by the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST), the Ministry of Health and other departments, he said.

Chen Chuanhong, an official with MOST, said the Health Ministry had issued a notice for common use of SARS samples nationwide, andthe Science and Technology Force under the National Command was also drafting a long-term plan.
