An eighth flood diversion area has been blasted open to release flood waters from China's Huaihe River.
Qiujiahu was first blasted open at 12:30 p.m. on Friday and a second channel was blown open at 7:46 p.m..
The flood diversion areas were originally natural overflow areas for swollen rivers, but local inhabitants have built levees to plant crops there during low water seasons.
The first opening in Qiujiahu flood diversion area reduced rateat which the water level was rising at Zhengyangguan hydrological station from 0.04 to 0.02 meters per hour.
The second opening would help further relieve the rising HuaiheRiver, which was experiencing its worst flooding since 1991, experts said.
The area covers 38.2 square kilometers, including 2,300 hectares of farmland, and has a population of 33,000, all of whom have been evacuated. This is the 15th occasion the area has been used for flood diversion since the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949.
