Putin Sets Three Goals for Russia's Development

Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Friday that doubling the gross domestic product (GDP), overcoming poverty and modernizing the armed forces are the three key strategic goals to ensure the country's development.

Addressing a meeting attended by representatives of different political factions and other senior law makers, Putin called for joint efforts "by consolidating the leading political forces and uniting Russia's intellectual resources" to realize the "serious and comprehensive job", Interfax reported.

The president expressed the hope that different political forces may "reach a consensus and work out a common position" on the key approaches to attaining such goals.

He noted that different public and political forces may differ or are even opposite in views and approaches to resolving these problems, which is "quite natural in an open democratic society".

Putin said that ensuring economic development and growth of GDP depends on state governance, qualification and professionalism of personnel, development of federative relations and the strengthening of the institution of local governments.

The strategic goals will not be achieved without free economic activity or an efficient social policy, Putin noted, adding that eradicating poverty and modernizing the military rely on strong economic advancement.

The Russian president urged participants in the meeting to set up a compact working group to draft mechanisms for solving the problems.
