Zou Grabs First World Boxing Championship Medal for China
China's Zou Shiming will be at least assured with bronze, the first ever medal China has in the World Amateur Boxing Championships after he entered the semifinals on Thursday.
China's Zou Shiming will be at least assured with bronze, the first ever medal China has in the World Amateur Boxing Championships after he entered the semifinals on Thursday.
The 22-year-old Zou, who caused a major upset on Wednesday by beating defending champion Yan Varela Barteleny of Cuba, won over Dydi Rudole of Slovakia in the quarterfinal.
He will fight Sergei Kazakov of Russia in the light flyweight (under 48kg) division on Friday. Light flyweight is the lightest ofthe 11 weight categories.
"I am growing in confidence with every bout and hopefully I can win gold for China," said Zou, who is from the southern province of Guizhou. "I moved well and boxed well today and I feel good about my chances. I am proud to have won China's first medal at a world championships."
