Authorities at China's second largest freshwater lake, the Dongting Lake in Hunan Province, were on high flood alert Thursday after monitoring stations recorded its second highest ever water level.
The water level at Dongting's main monitoring site Shimen was reported to be 62.31 meters at 1 a.m. Thursday. At 1:30 a.m., Hunan Province flood control department began to divert the water to Linanyuan diversion area, which has a storage capacity of 200 million cubic meters.
Meanwhile, the water level of the Yangtze River's mainstream remained below the warning line Thursday despite continual torrential rains since the end of June, Yangtze flood control headquarters announced.
Water levels have risen sharply and severe floods occurred in the tributaries of Lishui and Youshui in the Dongting Lake water system, but the Yangtze mainstream kept placid.
The State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters has asked the local authorities to closely monitor the Yangtze mainstream and branches.
