The second giant power generator of China's Three Gorges Project was connected to the power grids on Thursday for a trial operation that will last 72 hours.

Zhang Cheng, director of the Three Gorges Hydraulic Power Plant, said the trial operation, the most important test before it beginscommercial operation, began 4:30 p.m. on Thursday.

The generator, known as the No.5 generating unit, was built by a consortium comprised of Alstom of France and ABB of Switzerland, has a generating capacity of 700,000 kW.

The trial operation came just hours after the No.2 unit, the first of the project's 26 planned power generators, began its 30-day trial operation for power grids after a similar 72-hour trial operation.

The 30-day operation is the final trial operation before commercial production scheduled for mid-August.

The No.2 unit, built by a consortium comprised of Hewitt, Siemens and General Electric, was integrated into the Central China and East China power grids following a successful 72-hour trial period earlier this month.

The first attempted trial operation started on July 1, but failed after just 68 hours.

The failure of a sensor in a water purification system providing cooling water for the unit triggered the shutdown of theoperation. The second trial operation began on July 4.

The two generators will produce 26 million kWh per day for the power grids, easing power shortages in central and east China.

A spokesperson for the China Yangtze River Three Gorges ProjectDevelopment Corporation said four generators, and possibly six if everything went well, would begin commercial operation this year.

Launched in 1993 and expected to be completed in 2009, the Three Gorges Project will begin to pay dividends later this year, playing an important role in flood control, power generation, navigation, water diversion and environmental protection.
