China Uses Mengwa Flood Diversion Area Again

The Mengwa flood diversion area was used again late Thursday to divert floodwaters from the Huaihe River as water levels continued to rise, said local flood control authorities.

The Mengwa flood diversion area was used again late Thursday to divert floodwaters from the Huaihe River as water levels continued to rise, said local flood control authorities.

The diversion, which began at 11 p.m. Thursday, was ordered by the State Flood Control and Drought Prevention Headquarters as another flood peak will reach Wangjiaba section of the river on July 11, and the water level there is expected to exceed the 29 meter danger level.

This was the second time in a week the Mengwa flood diversion area was used to divert floodwaters from the river.

The Huaihe River, which runs through central China's Henan Province and east China's Anhui and Jiangsu provinces, has recently been ravaged by the worst flooding since 1991.

On July 3, the sluice gates at the Wangjiaba section of the Huaihe River were opened to divert floodwaters to Mengwa in Anhui's Funan and Yingshang counties.

However, the water level of the river climbed again over the past two days due to torrential rains in the river valley. By 10 p.m. Thursday, the water level at Wangjiaba reached 28.77 meters, only 0.23 meters below the warning line.
