Water Level in Lower Reaches of Huaihe River Reach 54-year High

The water level at Xuyi county section of the Huaihe River in the western Jiangsu province, east China, reached as high as 15.76 meters at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, the highest level in 54 years after the foundingof new China in 1949.

Acknowledging that the flood situation was very stark, local Huaihe River Flood Control Headquarters said that the floowater from the river has saturated protective piled sandbags along its banks and submerged roads in Xuyi county.

The Huaihe River, a major river in east China, had been hit by a severe flood 12 years ago.
