Water Level in Huaihe's Mainstream Rising
Due to continual torrential rains, the water level of the Huaihe River has begun to climb again afterfalling for two days, said the flood control headquarters of east China's Anhui Province Wednesday.

Tuesday and Wednesday saw heavy rains in the river valley. As of 6 a.m. Wednesday, the water level at Wangjiaba had risen to 27.63 meters. Those in Huainan City and Bengbu City had reached 23.65meters and 21.64 meters, respectively, up 0.43 and 0.57 meters from Tuesday.
The sluice gates of the Huaihongxin River, a key flood-control project in the Huaihe River, opened at 11:20 Wednesday to divert floodwater. The diversion was the second since July 4. In the days since July 7, the reservoirs of Meishan, Foziling and Mozitanhave also opened their sluices to reduce the pressure of the mainstream, said the headquarters.
According to weather forecasts, heavy rainfall is predicted to continue in most parts of the province along the Huaihe River and the Yangtze River from July 9 to 12. The localities have been warned to be on stand-by for the next flood peak.
Meanwhile, on Wednesday, east China's Jiangsu Province also declared a flood emergency at Hongze Lake and the lower reaches ofthe Huaihe River. The water level at Hongze Lake had reached 14.11meters by 2 p.m. Wednesday, 0.61 meters above the flood warning line. The provincial flood control headquarters has asked that the floodwater discharge capacity of the sluice gates along the HuaiheRiver mainstream be increased.
