The European Commission (EC), the executive arm of the European Union (EU), has planned to allocate 44 million euros (about 49.78 million US dollars) for the routine immunization component of the Partnership for the Reinforcement of Immunization Efficiency (PRIME) in Nigeria
According to a statement released on Wednesday by the European Union Office in Nigeria's capital Abuja, the amount was in addition to 20.4 million euros (about 23.08 million dollars) already granted to the Polio Eradication Program for 2001 and 2002as well as the National Immunization Days (NIDs).
According to the statement, the launching of the routine immunization component of the PRIME was marked by a workshop held in Abuja on June 30.
The statement said that the program, coordinated by the National Planning Commission and funded by the EC over a period offive years, would give support to the national routine immunization program for the achievement of effective and sustainable delivery system in Nigeria's six states.
The six states are Abia, Cross River, Gombe, Kebbi, Osun and Plateau which are drawn from each of the six geo-political zones in the west African country.
"At this initial stage, five local government areas per state will be targeted but by the end of 2007, it is expected that all LGA's in each state will be included in the PRIME program," it said.
The statement said that the overall purpose of the PRIME program was to support national efforts led by the NPI to reduce the burden of vaccine preventable diseases in the country.
"The specific objective is to considerably help the country raise the coverage of routine immunization against childhood diseases by the end of the program period," it said.
Due to poor awareness, poor acceptance and poor participation, Nigeria suffers a lot from tropical infectious diseases which could be prevented and from and put under control if substantial attention is paid to.
