Anhui Province in east China is stepping up its epidemic prevention efforts in the flooded areas along the Huaihe River in the worst flood since 1991, and no majorcases of disease have yet been reported.

Gao Kaiyan, head of the epidemic prevention team of the Anhui flood control authorities, said that by Tuesday night, there had been no reports of an epidemic outbreak, though there had been reports of some diarrhea cases in the areas most ravaged by the floods.

Gao said that the Anhui health authorities had sent 1,092 medical teams and disinfectant worth more than 1.5 million yuan (181,378 US dollars) to the flooded areas.

However, the prospects for preventing epidemic were not optimistic as many medical facilities in the flooded areas had been damaged and more floods were expected, he said.
