People Evacuated for Flood Diversion in E. China's Hongze Lake

Some 68,000 people living by Hongze Lake in Jiangsu Province, east China, are being urgently evacuatedin preparation for diverting water from Hongze Lake.

Some 68,000 people living by Hongze Lake in Jiangsu Province, east China, are being urgently evacuatedin preparation for diverting water from Hongze Lake.

By 7:00 a.m. Wednesday, the water level in Hongze Lake had risen 0.58 meters above the 13.5-meter warning mark, which is higher than that of 1991 when the lake suffered one of the biggestfloods in history.

The water level is kept rising, and the local flood control authorities are preparing for diverting flood from the lake to Baoji and other four towns that cover an area of 194 square kilometers.

At press time, women and children had been evacuated from the area.
