Anhui to Allocate More Relief Funds to Flood Areas

The provincial government of Anhui, the hardest hit area of the worst flooding in the Huaihe River valley since 1991, is allocating another 22.3 million yuan (2.7 million US dollars) to relief for flood victims.

The provincial government of Anhui, the hardest hit area of the worst flooding in the Huaihe River valley since 1991, is allocating another 22.3 million yuan (2.7 million US dollars) to relief for flood victims.

The disaster relief office, and finance and civil affairs departments made the announcement on Tuesday.

The civil affairs department has already appropriated 24.4 million yuan (2.95 million US dollars) of relief funds to the flooded areas, together with over 1,000 tons of grain, 3,792 tons of coal, more than 80,000 boxes of food and nearly 50,000 boxes ofpotable water.

The new funds would mainly be used for relocating residents from disaster areas and providing them with basic necessities, said an official with the civil affairs department.

The flood crest has passed Bengbu sluice gate and is approaching the lower reaches of the Huaihe River. Water levels along the trunk stream of the river are still dropping gradually.

All 570 dangerous sites spotted in the dykes along the river's mainstream and tributaries within the province have been repaired and restored, and over 638,000 people are monitoring the dykes around the clock.
