The Ministry of Agriculture pledged Monday that biological and ecological methods will be used in locust control in order to minimize environmental damage, according to Tuesday's China Daily.
Every year since 1997 2.2 million hectares of land in China have been vulnerable to the insect plague, an increase of 666,000 hectares from a decade ago, according to Huang Hui of the NationalAgro-Technical Extension Center.
The ministry is working on a national biological locust controlprogram, under which more manpower and money are expected to be mobilized in the prevention and control of the insect plague, saidHuang.
Over the past years, China has largely sprayed chemical insecticides to eradicate locusts, effective in killing the insects instantly, but detrimental to the environment, according to experts.
