Shanghai Continues to Face Electricity Shortage

Shanghai, China's major economic powerhouse, is registering strong growth in its electricity consumption, consuming 29.9 billion kwh of electricity from January to mid-June of this year, up 15.6 percent year-on-year.

Shanghai, China's major economic powerhouse, is registering strong growth in its electricity consumption, consuming 29.9 billion kwh of electricity from January to mid-June of this year, up 15.6 percent year-on-year.

Experts forecast that the peak load will reach or exceed 13.5 million kw in Shanghai this summer, a net increase of 1.15 millionkw over the same period last year.

Presently, Shanghai maintains an electricity supply capacity of 9.3 million kw, leaving a gap of around 1 million kw, despite its efforts to buy electricity from other provinces at higher prices.

Vice Mayor Tang Dengjie of the city has urged all electric power companies to pool their resources in order to successfully pass through the electricity consumption peak this summer.

The city has taken a series of measures to ensure electricity supply for both enterprises and citizens, including price controlsand limits on consumption.
