A senior official with the State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters on Monday warned of the need for close attention to the flood situation on the lower reaches of the Yangtze River.

Cheng Dianlong, vice-director of the Office of the State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters said that except for the Huaihe River, the main streams of the country's other major rivers were placid. But the Chuhe River, a branch at the lower reaches ofthe Yangtze was flooding, which should be given close attention.

From 11 a.m. to 4:58 p.m. Sunday, the railway from Tianjin to Pukou, a railroad artery from the country's north to south, was forced to suspend operation because a bridge which the railway run through was almost submerged by floodwater in the Chuhe River.

According to weather forecasters, some areas along the Yangtze, China's longest river, will experience heavy rainfall from Monday to Tuesday.

Therefore, close observation of the flood situation at the lower reaches of the Yangtze should be given undertaken in a timely manner, said a senior headquarters official.
