Flood-trapped Villagers Evacuated in Jiangsu Province
East China's Jiangsu Province Sunday evacuated 323 villagers trapped by floodwater flowing downstream from the Anhui Province section of the Huaihe River.
East China's Jiangsu Province Sunday evacuated 323 villagers trapped by floodwater flowing downstream from the Anhui Province section of the Huaihe River.
The villagers from low-lying Huayuan Village in Xuyi County were the first to be evacuated from Jiangsu during the current flood season in the Huaihe River Valley, involving the provinces of Anhui and Henan in the upper and middle reach and Shandong Province in the lower reaches.
Li Ruxiao, the village's Party secretary, said floodwater beganto invade at 10:00 p.m. July 5 and villagers were cut off as the water level rose to 1.5 to 2 meters.
The villagers began to evacuate by boat with the help of local government officials, including Wang Youfu, secretary of the Xuyi County Committee of the Communist Party of China.
The villagers were shipped to Daheqiao Township at noon after ahalf-hour trip by boat, and were assigned to live in vacant classrooms of middle and primary schools.
At 5:00 p.m. Sunday, Governor Liang Baohua of Jiangsu visited the village to make sure every resident had been evacuated.
The river has reached and, in some parts, even risen above the danger level due to continuous rainfall since late June.
Rarely-seen high water levels have prompted flood control authorities to take emergency measures to prevent dykes from beingbreached, including using designated areas for storing or diverting floodwater from the river, and blowing up part of the dyke of a lake to release floodwater.
About 200,000 people have been evacuated from the areas designated for storing or diverting floodwater from the Huaihe River in east China's Anhui Province.
The Huaihe River originates in Henan Province, central China, and runs across the provinces of Anhui, Jiangsu and Shandong before emptying into the Yellow Sea.
