The first generator in trial operation at the Three Gorges Dam began a new round of trial operation at 11:16 a.m. Friday, five hours after the first trial operation failed.

The first trial operation failed early Friday morning when the No 2 generator stopped, with four hours remaining to meet the required 72 hours of trial operation, due to technical problems relating to one of its sensors.

Once the generator passes a successful 72-hour period of trial operation, it will enter into a one-month period of examination. It has been planned to be put into commercial use in early August.

A total of 26 generators will be installed at the Three Gorges Dam, of which four will commence commercial operation in 2003.
