Minister of Construction Wang Guangtao inspected the rescue work at the site of the flooded subway tunnel in Shanghai on Friday, as instructed by Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao.

The minister was accompanied by a group of experts from Beijing. He sent regards to the soldiers who were placing sandbags around the tunnel and praised the efforts of the Shanghai municipal government in the rescue work.

Around 4:00 a.m. on Tuesday morning, water began seeping, and later, flooding, into a tunnel being built for a new subway station in the city's riverfront Huangpu District, causing the tunnel and part of an eight-story building above it to collapse.

No injuries were inflicted and all affected residents were evacuated.

The tunnel is part of the subway's new No. 4 Line, linking Shanghai's older western section with the new Pudong financial district across from the Huangpu River that cuts through the city center.

The reason for the collapse is still under investigation. The experts from Beijing held discussions on the next step of the rescue work with local experts.
