324 Aceh Rebels Killed in Military Operation from May 19

The Indonesian Military Force (TNI) said Friday that 324 rebels of the separatist Free Aceh Movement (GAM) have been killed and 258 others captured since the government launched an all-out military operation to crush rebellion in Aceh province on May 19.

Spokesman of the martial law administration Ditya Soedarsono was quoted by the national news agency Antara as saying that 256 other rebels had promised to join the unitary state of Republic Indonesia following persuasive efforts made by the military.

On the government's side, 28 soldiers and four policemen died and 70 others were injured during the operation.

Ditya said the military also seized 123 riffles of various types possessed by GAM rebels.
