US President George W. Bush reiterated Thursday that Liberian President Charles Taylor must step down but he said that the United States was still weighing options on how to help stabilize situation in the West African state.
"There's no question that step one of any effective policy, whether we are involved or not, is for (President) Charles Taylor to leave," Bush said in an interview with African media.
"Mr Taylor must go. A condition for any progress in Liberia is his removal," he added
Bush, who will travel to Africa on July 7-12, said that the United States is still in the process of gathering the informationnecessary to make a rational decision as to how to enforce the cease-fire in Liberia.
There are speculations that the Bush administration may be preparing to send between 500 and 2,000 forces to help keep a cease-fire in place in Liberia, which was set up by freed black slaves from the United States in the 19th century.
