Flood conditions on the Huaihe River remain severe as meteorologists predict heavy rainstorms for the next two days.
The China Central Meteorological Station (CMS) forecasted Thursday that daily precipitation in parts of the Huaihe River valley, including central China's Henan Province and east China's Anhui and Jiangsu Provinces, will reach 30 to 120 millimeters on Friday and Saturday, and could reach 150 millimeters in some areas.
Statistics from the CMS show that, compared with the precipitation for the same period of previous years, this year's figures reflect an increase of over 90 percent.
Since June 21, the Huaihe River valley has been hit by continuous rainstorms, and some areas have even experienced torrential rains. The water level of the river rose alarmingly, prompting the decision to open the sluice gates at the river's Wangjiaba section at 1:08 a.m. Thursday to divert floodwater.
The State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters issued an urgent advisory Tuesdayto all provinces along the Huaihe, urging close monitoring of the flood situation, more accurate weather forecasts, more effective flood control measures, and morefrequent patrols on the river's embankments.
To date, no major damage has occurred along the river's flood-control embankments.
