Seven trucks of relief goods donated by the Military Area Command of east China's Anhui Province were sent Thursday to the Mengwa Flood Diversion Area in the province'sFunan County.

The sluice gates at the Wangjiaba section of the Huaihe River, one of China's major rivers, were opened at 1:08 a.m. Thursday to divert floodwater caused by heavy rainfall.

It was the first time in 12 years that the sluice gates were opened at Wangjiaba, located in Funan County, to divert floodwater.

Nearly 15,000 of the 150,000 people live in the Mengwa Flood Diversion Area and its neighboring county of Yinshang were directly affected by the diversion and had been evacuated by Wednesday afternoon.

Around 6:30 p.m. Thursday, the seven trucks reached the flood control headquarters in Wangjiaba and the goods were to be dispensed to local residents later.

With a total value of 210,000 yuan (about 25,300 US dollars), the goods weighing in at 21 tons were mainly food, including rice, bread, and instant noodles, said Wang Hewen, commander of the Anhui Provincial Military Area Command.
