Eighty-nine people died of food poisoning and 3,643 became ill in China in the first half of this year, said the Chinese Health Ministry.
Of the 116 food poisoning cases reported to the ministry, 42 were caused by chemical products such as pesticides or rat poison, which, in most cases, unintentionally contaminated either foodstuffs or food storage utensils, or were put into the food intentionally. A total of 977 people became ill and 52 died in such cases.
Improper procedures in the kitchen, such as undercooking of food or unsanitary methods to store the food, caused 1,213 people to become ill and killed nine from January to June.
Eating poisonous animals or plants, such as fungi, claimed 21 lives, the ministry said.
The country's public health departments at various levels have been put on high alert because the summer season is the peak period for food poisoning. They were also required to improve efficiency in case investigations, reporting and information sharing.
