China plans to launch its third generation communications satellite, the Dong Fang Hong IV, in 2005. The satellite, better known as DFH4, meets China's need for a large capacity and long-term geo-synchronous communications and broadcast satellite.

The DFH4 is a state-of-the-art satellite. It has 50 transponders and has a life span of 15 years. Following the launch of the DFH4, China also plans to put into orbit a similar satellite for public communications' use.

The new satellites mark a new era in China's space technology, greatly improving the country's communication, broadcast and information capabilities. China's first and second generation communications satellites were launched in 1984 and 1997.
