About 30,000 Liberian Refugees Arrive in Cote d'Ivoire
About 30,000 Liberian refugees fleeing fighting in Liberia's capital Monrovia have arrived in neighboring Cote d'Ivoire in the past two months, according to a report reaching Lagos from Abidjan on Wednesday.
About 30,000 Liberian refugees fleeing fighting in Liberia's capital Monrovia have arrived in neighboring Cote d'Ivoire in the past two months, according to a report reaching Lagos from Abidjan on Wednesday.
But the arrival of the 30,000 Liberian refugees in Tabou, a border town with Liberia, has caused shortage of food items and medicines since an increasing number of refugees suffered from diarrhea and malaria, among others.
More refugees reportedly would come because more Liberians fleeing Liberia as a result of the situation in the country becomes tense.
The renewed fighting erupted last week in Liberia's capital hadleft some 300 people dead and over 1,000 others injured, making itthe worst phase in the four-year bloody civil war in the country.
The Liberian civil war, which lasted about 15 years and claimedat least 200,000 lives, flared up again in 1998 following attacks launched by the Liberians United for Reconciliation and Democracy rebels in northern Liberia.
Civil war over the past decade has made Liberia among the most miserable places in the world and the latest unrest since 1998 hasforced some 300,000 Liberians to flee to neighboring countries andclaimed thousands more lives.
