US Pleased with Sharon-Abbas Talks

The White House said Tuesday that US President George W. Bush is pleased with talks between Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and Palestinian Prime Minister Mahmud Abbas, describing the meeting as an "encouraging moment" in the pursuit of peace in the Middle East.

"The president is pleased that the process is continuing where Prime Minister Abbas and Prime Minister Sharon are working as hardas they are, as diligently as they are, in the spirit that they are to make progress and move their way forward on achieving peace," spokesman Ari Fleischer told reporters.

Fleischer made the remarks after Sharon and Abbas met in Jerusalem on Tuesday and both leaders expressed optimism that theywere embarking on a path toward peace.

"It's an encouraging moment when you see the two leaders speak like that," Fleischer said.
