The mainstream of the Huaihe River, one of China's major rivers, was hit by massive floods Tuesday, according to information provided by the flood control headquarters of east China's Jiangsu Province.

The volume flowing through the Bengpu sluice gate rose to 7,660cubic meters per second at 8:00 a.m. Tuesday, the fourth largest since 1949. The river's three flood discharge gates are now all open to expel the excess water.

Since June 21, the Huaihe River valley has experienced three major downpours, which is the main reason for the current floods.

Huang Li, deputy governor of Jiangsu Province and director of the province's flood control headquarters, Tuesday urged local governments to step up flood control efforts to deal with possibleflooding.
