Russian Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov and US Secretary of State Colin Powell Monday reiterated their countries' readiness for close cooperation on Middle East and Iraq issues.

Ivanov and Powell discussed the situation in the Middle East and the Iraqi issue in a telephone conversation, according to the Russian Foreign Ministry.

Both sides agreed to continue their close cooperation in the peace process in the Middle East in order to guarantee the implementation of the internationally-drafted "roadmap" peace plan and the effective monitoring of the process.

On the Iraq issue, Ivanov stressed that an administration of state power which is legitimate and has broad support from the international community should be established in the country as soon as possible. Full play should be given to the role of the United Nations in the post-war reconstruction of Iraq in accordance with UN Resolution 1483, he added.
