The United States is seriously violating a 1953 armistice agreement by imposing sanctions on the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) and stepping up its military buildup in South Korea, the official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported Tuesday.

The report quoted a statement from the Panmunjom Mission of the Korean People's Army as saying any US blockade or sanctions will be met with "strong and merciless retaliatory measures immediately taken by the Korean People's Army."

The United States is prepared for attacks against the DPRK through equipping its forces in South Korea with an investment of 11 billion US dollars, the statement said.

It said the United States will be held responsible for all the serious consequences resulting from its complete abrogation of the armistice agreement.

The armistice agreement was reached after the three-year Korean War ended in 1953.
