Russia's State Duma Speaker to Run for Presidency in 2008
The speaker of Russia's State Duma,or lower house of parliament, Gennady Seleznyov, said on Monday that he would run for the Russian presidency in 2008.
The speaker of Russia's State Duma,or lower house of parliament, Gennady Seleznyov, said on Monday that he would run for the Russian presidency in 2008.
Seleznyov made the announcement while meeting with students of the Surgut State University in Russia's Khanty-Mansi autonomous region.
"We all know that a person can be elected president for two four-year terms under the constitution, and we all understand who will win the elections this time. However, I will run for president in four years' time," Seleznyov was quoted by the Interfax news agency as saying.
Russia's next presidential elections will be held in April 2004.President Vladimir Putin, who enjoys overwhelming support among the Russian population, is expected to run for a second term as president, but he has said he would not seek a third term.
