All classes in Beijing's middle and primary schools and vocational schools resumed ahead of schedule Monday to make up lessons missed during the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) outbreak.
Beijing's middle and primary schools and kindergartens all closed Apr. 24 to prevent the spread of the SARS virus, sending about 1.7 million students home to continue their studies through television and the Internet.
On May 22, students of graduating classes at high schools returned to school to prepare for the national university entranceexams on June 7 and 8.
On June 9, graduates of the capital's primary schools and junior middle schools also went back to school while classes for other students were originally scheduled to resume on July 14.
Students will begin a five-week summer vacation on July 25 as planned and then return in the autumn for the next school year.
To ensure the health of students and teachers, schools are required to impose comprehensive SARS prevention measures, including monitoring students' temperatures, disinfecting school property and providing adequate ventilation. Schools are also encouraged to reduce the numbers in the classroom and lighten school work.
