Chinese Premier Meets Hong Kong Chief Executive

Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao met with Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) Chief ExecutiveTung Chee Hwa Sunday in Hong Kong.

Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao met with Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) Chief ExecutiveTung Chee Hwa Sunday in Hong Kong.

Tung expressed warm welcome to the premier on behalf of the SARgovernment and Hong Kong compatriots, saying that Wen's inspection tour displayed the central government's concern for Hong Kong.

Tung briefed Wen on Hong Kong's economic and social development and thanked the central government for its long-time support and help for Hong Kong.

The chief executive expressed his will to continue to do a good job and boost economic development in Hong Kong.

Wen said he came to Hong Kong on behalf of President Hu Jintao,to attend the signing ceremony of the Mainland/Hong Kong Closer Economic Partnership Arrangement and celebrations for marking the 6th anniversary of Hong Kong's return to the motherland.

He said he also took the opportunity to visit Hong Kong compatriots and convey the central government's concern for Hong Kong and greetings to Hong Kong people.

Wen said that since its return to the motherland six years ago,Hong Kong has fully implemented the "one country, two systems" principle and the Basic Law. Though Hong Kong experienced the Asian financial crisis, sluggishness of the global economy and adverse impact of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), Hong Kong residents, led by the SAR government headed by Tung Chee Hwa,united as one in maintaining Hong Kong's economic, financial and social stability.

Wen stressed that his new cabinet will continue to implement the principles of "one country, two systems," "Hong Kong people governing Hong Kong" and a high degree of autonomy, uphold Hong Kong's Basic Law, support the SAR government's administration according to law, and guarantee various rights and freedoms enjoyed by Hong Kong residents according to law.

Wen said he hoped the SAR government will unite the Hong Kong people, grasp the chances and speed up economic development.

He said he believed that Hong Kong will surely have a brighter future.
