Israel completed the withdrawal of its troops from the northern Gaza Strip town of Beit Hanun on Sunday night, the Israeli army said.

"The army is committed to...ensuring the success of the move andwill carefully monitor the activities of the Palestinian security forces," it said in a statement.

Israel started to withdraw its troops from the Gaza Strip on Sunday in accordance with an agreement to hand the security responsibility in Gaza over to the Palestinians.

Israeli Gaza Division Commander Gad Shamni and Palestinian General Abd al-Raziq al Mejeida decided the pullout in a Sunday meeting at the Erez Crossing in the Gaza Strip.

Also today, the Palestinian factions of Islamic resistance movement Hamas, Islamic Jihad (Holy War) and Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat's Fatah announced ceasefire with Israel.

The US administration has welcomed the decision made by the three Palestinian groups, but said the dismantling of terror networks in the region is needed to achieve lasting peace.

"Anything that reduces violence is a step in the right direction," said White House spokeswoman Ashley Snee.
